Insurance for legal professionals

Sorry, but we are unable to provide insurance for solicitors, lawyers and barristers.

Working in the legal sector comes with unique responsibilities, regulations and risks which require many of the professionals who work in the sector to carry comprehensive business insurance. Our business insurance policies cover legal fees to defend claims of negligence from unhappy clients.

In today’s litigious world it is important for legal professionals to be fully insured, as it isn’t just the client who can be the subject of an action or claim. As with most professions your work can be called into question, and when that happens you need the reassurance that you have the correct type of legal insurance in place to protect yourself should a claim arise.

What is legal professionals insurance?

Professional indemnity insurance for legal professionals will cover you against the legal implications that may arise if you make a mistake during the course of your work and will cover the legal costs and compensation awards within the indemnity limit.

Our legal professionals’ insurance is not available to solicitors, lawyers or barristers, but we can offer cover to the following professionals:

legal executives; legal secretaries; mediators; business analysts; legal counsellors; will writers; court advocates; arbitrators; legal researchers; claims management; loss assessors and adjustors, and many more. Click on the quote button to see if your profession is covered.

Why do legal professionals need insurance?

Negligence is a broad term and covers a range of possibilities, none of which need to be a deliberate act. As a result, any professional can be accused of negligence. Regardless of whether the claim against you is valid or not, you still need to do something about it, and if you’re not insured it could cost you a lot of money in legal costs to clear your name.

As a legal professional you could be accused of negligence if you miss an appointment at a court or tribunal, or miss a deadline for a court case.

Carrying comprehensive professional indemnity insurance will give you the reassurance that you’re covered for circumstances that are out of your control, allowing you to concentrate on your work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Alleged professional negligence

Negligence occurs when someone fails to fulfill certain duties or obligations. Examples of professional negligence can include, but is not limited to:

  • Imparting incorrect legal advice to a client that results in a loss.
  • Errors in drafting legal documents
  • Under-settling on a claim.
  • Missing limitation deadlines.

Professional Indemnity insurance would respond to provide cover for most instances such as these.

You cause property damage while in a clients premises

You accidentally damage property while visiting a client’s premises. A claim is made against you to pursue damages for the damaged item. This instance you would be covered by Public Liability insurance.

With our online quote and buy system you can see an indicative quotation for your insurance in a matter of minutes. Professional indemnity insurance can start from as little as £98.00 per annum.

As an example: a mediator with an annual turnover of up to £50,000 per annum, with a £500,000 indemnity limit in any one claim, would pay £192.00 per annum for professional indemnity insurance. That’s only  £16.00 a month, which we think is great value considering the cover and peace of mind that you benefit from (Figure correct as of 17.11.2021).

Apart from Professional Indemnity insurance accountants and finance professionals will typically be required to carry Public Liability insurance, especially if they work from office premises and meet clients face-to-face.

It is important to be aware that as a self-employed business owner, a claim can be made against you personally with unlimited personal liability, therefore Directors and Officers insurance is a valuable insurance policy which will cover you in this instance, which is provided as part of our Business Combined Liabilities insurance product.

Our Tax Enquiry and Legal Expenses insurance will also provide cover for costs incurred from a legal occurrence or claim that your indemnity and liability insurance does not cover.
