Trekking along the Great Wall of China for good causes

Posted on 30th August 2018 by

On the 7th of October, our Broking Manager, Michelle Haigh is flying to China to undertake an astonishing 26 mile trek along The Great Wall of China.

Her adventure will take 5 days and will involve climbing over rocky paths and scaling steep inclines. Michelle will be taking on this challenge alongside another group of people who she has yet to meet.  During the trip she will be staying in hostels, and carrying her own sleeping bag and pillow along the way!

Great Wall of China Trek

About the Great Wall

The Great Wall of China is made up of stone, brick, tamped earth, wood, and other materials. It was built to protect Chinese states and empires against raids and invasions. Some of these walls were built as early as the 7th century, and have been joined together over time to become bigger and stronger.

The Great Wall is an extraordinary 21.196 Kilometres long, and ranges from 25-30 feet high and in most places is around 16 feet wide. It also stands at around 2,624 feet above sea level at its highest point. Despite the fact that around a third of the wall has disappeared over many decades it still manages to attract around 50 million visitors each year.

Michelle has set herself a fundraising goal of £2000, which she will share between her two chosen charities; Claire House Children’s Hospice and Destination Florida.

About Claire House

Claire House helps seriously and terminally ill children live life to the full by creating wonderful experiences and bringing back a sense of normality to family life.

The charity provides specialist nurses and supports the families of the children in their care in order to help them smile again. It is a place for children to relax and enjoy themselves, whatever their age and whatever their condition.

Whether they are spent at home or in the hospice, they ensure the children’s days are memorable and special. Claire House will receive half of the money Michelle raises and the other half will be passed to Destination Florida.

About Destination Florida

Destination Florida is another children’s charity which organises life enhancing biennial trips to Florida for around 72 children from across the North of England.

High quality medical and pastoral care is provided by 110 adults throughout the time they are away in Florida. Children who are invited to join a Destination Florida trip are dealing with medical issues every day of their lives. It allows the parents of the children to have 8 days of respite, whilst being reassured their children are in good hands and enjoying a fun time.
